Fort Widley
Part of 'Palmerstone's Follies' this fort was built in 1861 to defend the city of Portsmouth from sea and land attack.
This enormous fort is surrounded by a dry moat with impressive mortar batteries should anyone attempt to enter the moat. These are accessed from tunnels deep underground the parade ground.
A central spiral stair from the parade ground gives access to the four main tunnels running of it radially. These lead to the barrack block and caponiers. The main magazine is located half way along the tunnel to the barrack block on the west side. There is a semi circular tunnel bypassing the main magazine.
On 19 February 1952, the Civil Defence Committee of Portsmouth Borough Council proposed the construction of a new main and group control for the Borough to be used in the event of a nuclear attack; it was decided this should be established at Fort Widley.
It is these underground chambers that most of the Paranormal activity have been reported. Whispered voices, EVP, and physical activity have all been reported here.
